02-May-2019 : Intellectual Property Enforcement Dialogue in Conjunction with World Intellectual Property Day 2019

HP Singapore through its Brunei Distributor, Sulaiman Development Services Sdn. Bhd in collaboration with Brunei Intellectual Property Office (BruIPO), Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry and the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF), the Prime Minister's Office held a dialogue on Intellectual Property (IP) enforcement on Thursday, 2nd May 2019 at Indera Samudera Hall, The Empire Hotel and Country Club. Present at the event as the Guest of Honour was Yang Mulia Dayang Hajah Tutiaty binti Haji Abdul Wahab, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Corporate and Industry) at the Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry.

The half day dialogue aimed to educate and create awareness to all the relevant stakeholders, particularly the enforcement agencies, Ministries and Government Departments on how to identify counterfeit goods and understand the legal implications of IP rights infringement. It was held in conjunction with the World Intellectual Property Day 2019 which is a global event celebrated every April 26th by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to commemorate the importance of Intellectual Property (IP) in our everyday life. Member States of WIPO, including Brunei Darussalam, celebrate the World IP Day with activities around the globe to demonstrate how IP works and to drive the technological innovation. This year's theme, "Reach for Gold: IP and Sports", explores the connections between the worlds of IP and sports.  

Also in attendance were Yang Mulia Superintendent Pang Teck Ann, Acting Deputy Director of Criminal Investigation Department, Royal Brunei Police Force; Mr. Shahid Khan, Managing Director of Emerging Countries South East Asia & Korea of HP Singapore; Yang Mulia Awang Haji Sulaiman bin Haji Ahai, Managing Director of Sulaiman Development Services Sdn. Bhd and Yang Mulia Dayang Shahrinah binti Yusof Khan, Deputy registrar and Head of Brunei Intellectual Property Office (BruIPO); officials from the Attorney General Chambers; the Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry; the Royal Brunei Police Force; Government-Linked Companies (GLCs); Local businesses and the Private Sectors.

In his welcoming remarks, Mr. Shahid Khan – Managing Director, Emerging Countries South East Asia & Korea extended his appreciation to the Brunei Intellectual Property Office (BruIPO) and the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) for their cooperation and commitment in IP enforcement. He further added that HP Singapore stands with BruIPO, RBPF, and the relevant government agencies in their respective roles in safeguarding Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) protection and enforcement, emphasizing on the importance of protecting consumer rights.

The event was later followed by a presentation from BruIPO's representatives which provided the audience with an insight into the different types of IP and why securing IP rights protection is important.  This was followed by a presentation from the representative of HP Singapore who touched on counterfeit/fake HP print cartridges and ways to identify such products. Subsequently, a representative from the Attorney General's Chambers presented on Brunei Darussalam's perspective on IP rights enforcement which was followed by the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) sharing their experience in prosecution of IP infringement cases.  The dialogue was later concluded with a Question and Answer session.
