A contract signing ceremony was held on Tuesday, 2nd July 2019 at RUANG BN in the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex for two local startup companies who will be providing their services to Brunei National Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (PetroleumBRUNEI) under the umbrella of the i-Usahawan initiative driven by the Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry. The signing ceremony was held at. Present as the Guest of Honour was Yang Mulia Awang Haji Zolkiflee bin Haji Abdul Karim, Permanent Secretary (Manpower) at the Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry.
Also in attendance were Mr. Haydn Ian Furlonge, the Chief Executive Officer of PetroleumBRUNEI, other government officials and officers from PetroleumBRUNEI also attended the ceremony.
The two local startup companies - OCDBN and DMOS Technologies signed a five-year contract to provide office cleaning services and printing services for PetroleumBRUNEI respectively, commencing August this year. These contracts are the first two contracts awarded by PetroleumBRUNEI under the i-Usahawan scheme, and PetroleumBRUNEI will conduct another round of i-Usahawan tenders in the second half of this year.
Mr. Haydn Ian Furlonge in his welcoming remarks highlighted that "the i-Usahawan programme is already showing how added-value can be created from the oil and gas sector, by encouraging the establishment of other businesses". He added that "PetroleumBRUNEl is working closely with key stakeholders, including the MEMI and with the Ministry of Finance and Economy, to increase activity in the sector and importantly to create more spin-off opportunities such as this".
He added, "We do not see our role as ending here, as a mere client-contractor relationship. PetroleumBRUNEI has also developed an SME Development Framework.The objective of this framework is to increase local small and medium enterprises (SME) competency and capability with training and coaching in areas such as finance, general management, HSSE, and business processes".
i-Usahawan was initiated by the Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry (MEMI) as a youth entrepreneurship development programme. It was launched by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam during the official opening ceremony of the 13th National Youth Day on 1st August 2018.
