01-Mar-2020 : The Ministry of Energy and its Statutory Body Participated in Riadah Berbasikal Semangat Kebangsaan 2020

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam on 1st March 2020 consented to participate in the "Riadah Berbasikal Semangat Kebangsaan" in conjunction with the 36th National Day at the Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar 'Ali Saifuddien in Bandar Seri Begawan. Accompanying His Majesty were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Malik, His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah and Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Abdul Mu'min.

With the aims to enliven the National Day celebration and promote national unity through sporting activities, the event started with  a 11.5 Kilometer mass cycling activity led by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam. Also taking part in the cycling activity from the Ministry of Energy were Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mat Suny bin Haji Md. Hussein, Minister of Energy; Yang Mulia Dato Seri Paduka Haji Matsatejo bin Sokiaw, Deputy Minister of Energy, Yang Mulia Awang Haji Azhar bin Haji Yahya, Permanent Secretary (Energy) and Yang Mulia Pengiran Haji Jamra Weira bin Pengiran Haji Petra, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Energy and Power).

Several events were also held concurrently with the cycling activity including interactive activities and exhibitions by Government Ministries, Private Agencies, Corporate Bodies and Non-Government Organization (NGO). The Ministry of Energy participated in the exhibition, showcasing the Ministry's services and initiatives. During the exhibition at the Ministry's booth, His Majesty was greeted by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mat Suny bin Haji Md. Hussein, Minister of Energy. Also present was Yang Mulia Dato Seri Paduka Haji Matsatejo bin Sokiaw, Deputy Minister of Energy.

His Majesty was first introduced to Safety Health Environment National Authority (SHENA), a newly established statutory body set up under the Safety, Health and Environment National Authority Order, 2018 and enforced 1 April 2017. It regulates and enforces all matters pertaining to workplace safety, health and environment as well as radiation in Brunei Darussalam.

Present was the SHENA Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and staff. SHENA showcased its Assets Integrity Process Safety (AI-PS), Radiation equipment and PPE, construction site model, Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) demonstration. Highlight during the showcase was the Virtual Reality (VR) demonstration by SHENA Team member. SHENA is adopting technology to create awareness through a gamification approach across Brunei and to educate school children on the importance of HSE in daily life. This approach is hoped to embrace HSE lifestyle from young and at the same time creating a ripple effect to their families and surroundings.

Also showcased in SHENA's booth were Radiation related equipment which aims to create awareness on types of radiation, radiation exposure and on proper radiation PPE. SHENA is committed to make a difference and ensure Brunei Darussalam is a safe place to work and live and maintaining a robust fit for purpose national safety, health and environmental regulatory framework and ensuring that risks to people, assets and the environment are controlled in compliance with laws and regulations set by the Government, implemented by those who created the risk and underpinned by continuous improvement.

As a government agency responsible for overseeing the country's energy matters, the Ministry through its Sustainable Energy Division exhibited a 1KW solar panel system that is connected to an inverter, generating electricity to power a projector that showcases Energy, Efficiency and Conservation video. This is part of the Ministry's ongoing effort to promote energy saving culture through the use of renewable and clean energy sources. Solar power system enables excess energy generated by solar panels to be stored in a battery for later use. To further raise awareness on renewable energy, an electric bicycle was introduced, emphasizing on a greener and more environmentally sustainable form of transportation. In line with the theme "Energy, Efficiency and Conversation", the Ministry also took the opportunity to launch an energy saving pledge.

Meanwhile, the Ministry through In-Country Value showcased the i-Usahawan initiatives by introducing four i-Usahawan entrepreneurs that have been recently awarded contract with the Oil and Gas Sector and Government Agency. The entrepreneurs displayed their products, services and local workers as a part of an on-going effort to promote youth's participation in business and entrepreneurship. The exhibition also provided the opportunity for the entrepreneurs to share their entrepreneurial journey since securing a contract under the i-Usahawan program.

Two of the entrepreneurs, Syarikat Amira Barakah and S.B. Kani Company were awarded with contracts for the provision of Canteen and Vending Machine Services and Provision of Grass-cutting Services for Brunei Shell Petroleum Company respectively. Mohd.HMS Enterprise was awarded provision of Air-conditioning Servicing and Maintenance Services for Total E&P Borneo. HanR Sdn Bhd is the first entrepreneur to be awarded i-Usahawan Contract under the Government of Brunei Darussalam. Since January 2020, the company has been providing Cleaning Services for Department of Electrical Services, Ministry of Energy. Since its launching in August 2018, a total of 31 contracts have been secured under the i-Usahawan initiative, where 12 contracts amounting to about BND16 million have been awarded and 170 locals have been employed.

The "Riadah Berbasikal Semangat Kebangsaan 2020" was jointly organized by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports; the Ministry of Home Affairs; the Ministry of Religious Affairs; the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism; the Ministry of Defence; the Ministry of Health; the Ministry of Education; the Ministry of Transportation and Info-Communications together with involvement of other ministries and the Brunei Darussalam Cycling Federation. The event marks the Ministry's second participation since becoming a Ministry in 2018.
